“Flight is early, just after six in the morning so I’ll have plenty of time to get the hire car and drive to Lakeview Care.” Charlotte unlocked the gate as Trev packed up the equipment he’d used to create a cast of the footprint from a rapid-set compound. “I’ll leave at half past four to get to the airport in time.”

“Happy to drive you.” He wished she would let him.

“Again, thanks but I’m better getting myself there so I can focus on the day ahead. Are you leaving that to dry?”

“Yeah. Let’s take a quick look at your theory.” He grinned as he followed Charlotte through the gate. She’d cut part of the vine back with a few choice words under her breath. The remains were piled on the grass until she worked out what to do with them. Something about starting a compost heap.

When he’d arrived just after dawn, he’d hoped not to disturb Charlotte, but it was only a few minutes before she’d brought him a coffee, and stayed there as he’d worked. There was a deep tiredness about her but her eyes were bright and excited about something she’d remembered from the other night.

“The footprint reminded me. Not at once, but later, after I’d booked the flights. It was what Kevin said.”

They followed the main track to the entrance of the flower trail. There, they stopped.

“Okay, run through it with me.” Trev peered into the gloom. This was a dark place despite the early sun making some inroads through the canopy.

“Kevin told you he approached the clearing from over there.” Charlotte pointed in the general direction of the other vehicle entrance, out of sight from here. “He’d cut across the back of the bushland to reach it. I wonder how many people know there’s a path there?”

“Lots of people use this area to walk.”

“Nope. Not really. I’d say a dozen, tops, and they tend to be the same walkers, usually with dogs and because of that, they avoid going into the heavy growth. Snakes, perhaps? Anyway, not lots.”

He managed to hide his smile. Listening to her reasoning always taught him something. Sometimes about her, often about himself and how to do his own job better.

“I saw somebody here. Well,” she moved a few steps, “here. I think.”

“And it was raining at the time?”

“Bucketing down. From here, the view is clear.” She turned to face the bookshop. Her apartment was easy to see and the window overlooked this area. “Whoever this person was, Kevin or someone else, they stood in this spot or very close.”

“You mentioned footprints. Do you think there may be evidence to prove it was him all along?” Trev peered at the ground. It was churned up by the volume of foot traffic over the past few days. There were footprints, but they mingled with other ones.

“Not so much here, but along the trail. I walked in and ran out. Kevin claims he walked out. And we know one person walked in. It was muddy and slippery underfoot.
